Zebee City Guide Series: Vilnius, Lithuania

Looking for a weekend getaway? Vilnius might just be it! A city proud of its medieval Old Town, rich cuisine (or else known as the Potato Diet) and the most beautiful nature.

FAVOURITE AREA

Without a doubt it is the Cathedral Square - all must-sees in one place! Stop in front of the front door of the Cathedral for a moment and take it all in. I promise you it's breathtaking.

Go up the bell tower (one of the oldest around) for great panoramic views of the city. On the way out look out for a magic tile which says STEBUKLAS ('miracle' in Lithuanian). Step on it, make a wish, and turn around three times with your eyes shut (don't step out of the tile borders or it won't count!). You'll be forever changed.

Walk to the right behind the Cathedral and clamber up the rocky steps to the 48m-high (I know...we're a flat country) Gediminas Hill for more views and an eight centuries old castle. Spectacular.

FAVOURITE BAR:

Distilerija

ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'D GIVE A NEW VISITOR TO THE CITY:

Depending on where you're from, some locals in the streets may seem a bit moody and look like they have grim expressions in their faces. Don't worry, it's just that. Everyone's actually very friendly and accommodating.

THAT GREAT PLACE WITH INCREDIBLE PRICE:

La Boheme @labohemevilnius

THE ONE DISH YOU HAVE TO TRY:

C E P E L I N A I ! ! !  or anything to do with potatoes...

NUMBER ONE TOURIST TRAP TO AVOID....

Taxi - like in most places. If you need one quick, call 1424. Otherwise use Uber, Bolt (slightly cheaper) or a good old tram.

HOW TO DO THE TOURIST SIGHTS WITHOUT BEING A TOURIST....

Walk. Vilnius isn't big.

FINALLY, ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD? :-)

Once you're done with the world famous Old Town of Vilnius and all of its' sights, the Republic of Uzupis (independent bohemian republic in the heart of Vilnius - look out for its hilarious constitution on the wall, once you're there), and the one of a kind Church of St. Anne and Bernardine... if your schedule allows, take half a day to go see Trakai Castle. It's a 30 min drive (public transport available) west of the city - truly worth it. Enjoy!
