Zebee City Guide Series: Newcastle, UK

Having spent her glorious University years in the city, our Founder Hui gives us her unique insight into the city with so much more than Geordie Shore!!!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE AREA OR HIDDEN GEM...

The Botanist! It is a restaurant/pub right in the centre of Newcastle although it feels more like an indoor garden where you can eat, drink and listen to live music. It's really cosy in the winter. Oh and the cocktails are great!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE BAR OFF THE BEATEN TRACK?

As You Like It (Jesmond, Newcastle). Yep it's the actual name of the bar. It has beautiful decor and comfy sofa. Trust me, you will like it for sure!

WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'D GIVE A NEW VISITOR TO THE CITY?

Newcastle is quite a small but friendly city in the North East of England. The locals will go out of their way to help anyone. The accent isn't exactly easy to understand if you are a first-time visitor from afar. If someone says "Why aye man!", it means "Yes!"

WHAT PLACE PROVIDES GREAT SERVICE BUT WITH INEXPENSIVE PRICES?

Go to the Sunday market by Quayside. Great street food for a decent price and you also get to enjoy a nice Sunday stroll by the river :-)

WHAT'S THE ONE FOOD DISH YOU HAVE TO TRY?

Pease pudding. No, it's not a pudding. It's more like a savoury peas sauce. The Geordies (people who are from Newcastle) love it.

WHAT'S THE NUMBER ONE TOURIST TRAP YOU'D RECOMMEND AVOIDING?

It's too small to have a tourist trap haha!

HOW TO DO THE TOURIST SIGHTS WITHOUT BEING A TOURIST?

Newcastle is a small city and you can walk around the city in a day. It is known for its nightlife due to the fact that there are 5 universities in the city and its surrounding areas. Join a bar crawl in the evening is probably the best way to be a tourist without looking like one.

FINALLY, ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD? :-)

Definitely check out the Angel of the North. It is an angel looking statue in the outskirts of the city. Imagine Christ the Redeemer, but smaller... It is the pride and joy of North East of England. Although, some people might say St. James' Park Stadium (the home ground of Newcastle United) is the true pride and joy.
